Richie Stott’s Plasmatics
The Plasmatics were born from the burgeoning New York City CBGB punk scene of the late 1970s. Founding guitarist Richie Stotts’ stage performances alongside vocalist Wendy O. Williams and the band were – and remain today – legendary.
Formed in 1977, the Plasmatics soon became one of the hottest tickets in the Manhattan music scene. Their conceptual and aggressive performance art was designed to communicate their own philosophical stance on corruption and conformity. Their stage antics were not without humor, though! Whether chainsawing guitars, sledgehammering television sets or blowing up cars, they earned a reputation for their shocking and over-the-top performances.
The Plasmatics recorded on both STIFF and Capitol Records, appeared on television alongside John Candy (SCTV), and as guests on Fridays (ABC) and Solid Gold.
Sadly, Wendy O Williams committed suicide in 1998.
“Following my exodus from the Plasmatics, I went back to school and worked in a non-music environment in New York City. Two years ago, in Austin, I met some much younger musicians who had put together a tribute band honoring the late Wendy O. Williams and the Plasmatics. They had spirit and humor and gave a nod to the band in a way that made me want to join them on stage. And so, here is our combined tribute to the original Plasmatics!”
